The University of Luxembourg seeks outstanding researchers for the recently formed Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT) http://ping.fm/Q57Ll , carrying out interdisciplinary research in secure, reliable and trustworthy ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) systems and services. Research is conducted in close collaboration with industrial partners. SES S.A. http://www.ses.com is one of our cooperation partners supporting a research program in Satellite Systems which includes the analysis of legal and regulatory challenges in satellite communications.
The Centre invites applications for:
Research Associates (Postdoc) positions in law (m/f)

Area

Topics of research will be diverse and include
the field of telecommunications law with network-related issues such as neutrality
the field of data protection and privacy
the field of space law with the legal framework for orbital activities
the field of private and public law with third party liability-issues
the field of European law with competition law-related issues
the field of international law with the relevance of the World Trade Organization
All of these will include an interdisciplinary and application-oriented approach as well as touching issues of several fields in each individual research theme.

Tasks

A successful candidate will conduct research in one or more of the centre projects and assist in the development of the SnT project portfolio.
Profile

Applicants should therefore have an excellent background, a PhD (or be near completion) or equivalent in law and ideally specialised knowledge in one of the above-mentioned fields and an interest to extend their research integrating economic and technical issues in cooperation with other members of the team in the Research Program on Satellite Systems. The candidate should have a strong research and publication record relevant to the field.
Language skills

Fluent written and verbal communication skills in English are required.
Knowledge of French, German or Luxembourgish is desirable.

Unique opportunity to come to the University of Queesnsland to get a PhD?
We are looking for 1‐2 outstanding PhD candidates to work on a project investigating the evolution and function of reef fish colour patterns.
Students will be based at The University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia, in the Queensland Brain Institute and work in collaboration with researchers in the School of Biological Sciences, UQ and at the University of Bristol, UK. Supervisors will be Prof.Justin Marshall, Dr. Karen Cheney, Dr. Shelby Temple and/or Prof. Tom Cribb.
Applicants should have interests and preferably experience in neuroethology, neurobiology, sensory biology, fish behaviour, evolution of visual signals, and/or
animal communication mechanisms. The PhD will include behavioural experiments, field observations, field spectrophotometry, retinal anatomy and/or microspectrophotometry.
The ideal candidate would be a qualified SCUBA diver, have experience in the field, and be prepared to spend time at field stations, such as Lizard Island and Heron Island.
Prospective students will be expected to secure either an:

The Barcelona GSE has a rolling admission policy so applications are accepted throughout the year. When the total number of places in a program is covered, no more applications will be reviewed for that program. (For example, last year the Economics program closed applications on May 15). The Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment at UWS is seeking an excellent doctoral candidate to undertake a funded project entitled “Microorganisms, Ecosystem Functions and Climate Change”. About the Project This study shall investigate the effect of various climate variables (increased temperature, carbon dioxide and altered precipitation) and extreme weathers (flooding and extreme drought) on soil biodiversity, certain ecosystem functions and link this change in functions with changes in associated functional groups such as microbes involved in carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus cycling.

The project aims to improve mechanistic understanding of feedback responses to climate change which could be further exploited to improve the national and global prediction. This is a very flexible project and could be modified according to interests of the successful candidate. As a doctoral student, you will gain experience in experimental design, GHG measurement techniques and range of state of art of molecular approaches such as Terminal Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (TRFLP), cloning and sequencing, pyrosequencing, multivariate statistical analyses, scientific writing and presentation. During the course of the project, you will have access to some of the best known scientists in this field for consultation and advice.

There is a possibility of the successful candidate spending a period of time at Imperial College, London (UK) for sample collection and training in process measurements. Criteria The successful applicant should: demonstrate excellent academic performance in the study of microorganisms, ecosystem functions and climate change or a related discipline. hold qualifications and experience equal to an Australian First Class Bachelor Honours degree.

The Maria Pia Gratton International Award at the University of Illinois was established by the family and friends of Maria Pia Gratton. Pia passed away on October 31, 1995, at the age of 47. When she came to the United States, Pia had two small children, a degree in math, and little grasp of the English language. Pia enrolled in classes to learn English and computer programming, and with determination she made a home for her family, developed close friendships and began a career in her new country. Who is eligible to apply for the Gratton Award?

This award is intended to enable a female graduate student from outside the United States to have an academic and cultural experience at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). Preference will be given to a student who has had a limited opportunity to travel outside of her home country.

Applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria to apply:

Applicants must either be: a) currently enrolled as graduate students at UIUC with at least one academic year (i.e., two semesters) of graduate school remaining after the conclusion of the academic year in which the student is applying for the Gratton Award; OR b) if not currently enrolled as graduate students at UIUC, applicants must be applying as graduate students at UIUC for the academic year immediately following the year in which the student is applying for the Gratton Award (Note: Applicants who have not yet been admitted to UIUC must follow regular academic admission procedures. What does the Gratton Award include?

What does the application consist of?

The application consists of three questionnaires and one electronic material submission. The first questionnaire asks for basic information about the applicant, the second questionnaire asks the applicant to respond to an essay prompt, and the third questionnaire asks the applicant to provide detailed financial information about funding sources. The electronic material submission outlines the conditions of applying for the award and requires an electronic signature. Scholarship applicants must complete and submit all of the questionnaires as well as the electronic signature form in the application. Your paper must be your own original work, and you should not have used it in any other context. It will be judged on its academic merit. At least two members of the academic staff will assess the paper independently (double blind), and in case of dispute will refer the paper to a third member/party.

The University of Cyprus announces the granting of 25 scholarships for postgraduate Master’s degrees and PhD in the academic year 2011/2012. The scholarships are for postgraduate courses (beginning study in September 2011) and their aim is to develop and strengthen the relations and cooperation of the University of Cyprus with the Cypriots expatriates and to attract a large number of foreign students. The scholarships cover all the fields of study and are addressed to Cypriots expatriates and to foreign nationals (from non EU countries).

1. Five (5) out of the 25 scholarships will be allocated to Cypriot applicants who are permanent residents of Australia in order to strengthen the cooperation with the Australian Homogeny.
2. Three (3) out of the 25 scholarships will be granted to students from the University of Gjirokastra (Argyrokastro) – Albania.
3. One (1) scholarship will be granted for strengthening the Orthodox Teachers College in Kenya.
4. The other sixteen (16) scholarships will be allocated to Cypriot applicants who are permanent residents in foreign countries and to foreign nationals from non EU countries.

A. What the scholarships cover:
1. Tuition fees of the postgraduate program. The fees will be paid by the revenue of the Department granted the scholarship.
2. Allowance scholarship equal to €680 per month for a total duration of 12 months (€680 X 12 = €8,160).
3. The fellows will be able to apply for accommodation in the Students Halls of Residence through the approved procedures of the University. The rent will be covered by the allowance of the scholarship that will receive. Those applicants who would like to stay in the students halls of residence should submit a separate application to the Housing Office of the Students Affair and Welfare Service.

B. Duration of a scholarship:
1. The initial period of scholarship granted is for 12 months.
2. The scholarship might be renewed beyond 12 months.
3. The scholarship will be renewed every six months and will be able to cover the maximum duration of the postgraduate program.
4. The scholarship for masters – level programs can be extended up to 2 years.
5. The scholarship for doctoral programs can be extended beyond 2 years but not more than 4 years considering that the research supervisor of the student confirms per semester that the doctoral student’s research meets the requirements and encourages the doctoral students to submit their thesis before completing 4 years.
6. The scholarship will also cover the summer months provided that the academic/research supervisor of the student confirms that the student will work on her/his own responsibility.
7. The academic performance of the scholars should be satisfactory and should be certified by their academic or research supervisor.
8. Scholars should be distinguished in moral.

C. Criteria for evaluation:
The Departmental Councils or other subcommittees appointed specifically for this purpose are responsible for the evaluation of the candidates for the granting of a scholarship. The criteria for the evaluation are:
1. Academic performance and achievements of the candidate.
2. Any additional qualifications of the candidate.
3. Recommendation letters for the candidate.
4. Work experience of the candidate.
5. Moral of the candidate.
6. Other criteria set by the Council of each Department.

The Council of the Department when considering applications for granting a scholarship may take into consideration the socioeconomic status of the candidate or her/his family which consists of the social – marital status and by her/his gross annual income. In the case that the applicant is married with children the application will be treated differently and will get different weight during the evaluation.

D. Requirements for submitting an application – Cypriot expatriates:
Applicants must meet the following requirements in order to claim a scholarship:
1. Be Cypriot expatriates. They should submit a Cyprus citizenship certificate or a certificate from a Public Authority of Cyprus abroad (Consular Authorities) which proves that they have Cypriot origin.
2. Have permanent residence in a foreign country for a continuous period of at least thirty (30) months before submitting their application for a scholarship. They should submit a certificate from Public Authority of Cyprus abroad to certify this.
3. To have a satisfactory academic performance.
4. To have high moral.
5. Each academic department will decide whether the candidates need to possess a certificate of Greek language skills when applying for a place in their postgraduate programs and for a scholarship grant. In the case that the specific program of study requires knowledge of the Greek language then the department concerned will determine the required level of knowledge of Greek.

E. Requirements for submitting an application – Foreign Nationals:
Applicants must meet the following requirements in order to claim a scholarship:
1. Be foreign nationals from non-EU countries.
2. To have a satisfactory academic performance.
3. To have high moral.
4. Each academic department will decide whether the candidates need to possess a certificate of Greek language skills when applying for a place in their postgraduate programs and for a scholarship grant. In the case that the specific program of study requires knowledge of the Greek language then the department concerned will determine the required level of knowledge of Greek.
5. The applications to both postgraduate programs and scholarship grand claims by foreign applicants (non-EU) require securing a Visa to Cyprus or renewal of their temporary residence permit in Cyprus.

Documents to be submitted by foreign applicants (non-EU) to secure a Visa (provided that they are offered a place in a postgraduate program):
1. Original and attested* copies of academic qualifications and transcripts.
2. Acceptance letter from the University of Cyprus.
3. Curriculum Vitae in Greek and English language.
4. Valid passport and attested* copy of the passport (valid for at least two years from the beginning of the semester).
5. Original letter and attested* copy of good conduct certificate from the police authorities.
6. Medical certificates attesting to good health and including blood tests and Chest X-Ray.

Attestation process of documents *
Students are required to attest the following documents by the appropriate/relevant authorities in their home country:
o academic documents
o police clearance certificate
o passport

The attestation process differs between countries that have signed the Hague Convention, 1961 (Apostille) and those who have not. Attested documents must be in English; in cases where translations are necessary, these must be done by an approved translator and attested by the relevant authorities in home country.

Students applying from countries that have signed the Hague Convention, 1961 (Apostille): i.e. India
Students must have their documents attested by the designated, competent government authority which is authorized to affix the Apostille on their documents. The Ministry of Justice or Ministry of Foreign Affairs is usually the government body that issues the Apostille.

Students applying from countries that have not signed the Hague Convention 1961 (Apostille) but have a Cyprus Representation in their home country: i.e. Pakistan, Nepal, Cameroon, Nigeria, and Bangladesh
Students must have their documents attested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in their home country and then further attested by the Cyprus Embassy, High Commission or Consulate.

Students applying from China
Based on bilateral agreements between Cyprus and China, students must have their documents attested by the Ministry of Justice. There is no need for the documents to be further attested by the Cyprus Embassy.

Students applying from Russia and Serbia
Based on bilateral agreements between Cyprus, Russian and Serbian students are exempted from the above procedures, provided all their documents are officially signed and stamped by the issuing authority.

F. Scholars Obligations:
1. The Departmental Council may decide to suspend, reduce or terminate a scholarship in a particular student if it considers that special circumstances so require (e.g. reasons for the academic performance of fellow).
2. The Departmental Council will consider renewal of the scholarship provided that the student’s academic performance is satisfactory. The performance of the fellow will be certified by her/his academic/research supervisor.
3. In case that the fellow is admitted to a graduate program of another Department, the new Department accepting the student will examine and decide whether will grant the scholarship.
4. In case that the fellow interrupts her/his studies during the first year of study, the Department Council may request her/him to return the amount of the scholarship paid by the department.

A total of 10 TOEFL scholarships will be awarded to Japanese students demonstrating academic excellence. The International Society of Offshore and Polar Engineers (ISOPE) encourages students to study and/or to conduct research in any of Offshore Mechanics, Ocean, Arctic, and Related Engineering fields, or to participate in the annual ISOPE Conferences. For this purpose, ISOPE grants scholarships of $1,000 each to outstanding graduate students and entering new graduate students for the academic year 2011−2012. Three to five scholarships were granted each year. The recipients are encouraged to join the ISOPE student membership.

Some important guidelines to consider when applying for Goethe Business School Scholarships:
Scholarships are meant to supplement, rather than replace other funding sources.
Scholarship amount cover partial costs of the program and may vary based on each individual profile of the applicant. The amount granted is deducted from the overall tuition prior to the start of the program.
Applicants for the Goethe MBA or EMFA are allowed to apply for a maximum of two different scholarships as part of their application. Applicants may only be awarded one scholarship in total.
Applicants who receive financial support from their company may not qualify for certain scholarships.
Applicants who apply for the Goethe Business School Career Loan may not qualify for a scholarship.
Applicants must decide within seven days from the date the offer letter is issued to secure their scholarships. Applicants who do not reply by this timeline will forfeit their scholarship award to another qualified applicant.

Greenet is an Initial Training Network (ITN) Marie Curie project that is focused on the analysis, design, and optimization of energy efficient wireless communication systems and networks.

It will create a fully-integrated and multi-disciplinary network of 17 Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) working in 10 first-class institutions distributed in 7 European countries. The consortium is formed by 3 Universities, 3 Research Centers and 4 Private Companies. This Network will offer to a group of newly recruited ESRs a cross-sectorial environment to shape their long-term research view and get fundamental methodological tools on various research fields (such as, cooperative communications, cognitive networks and network coding).

ELIGIBILITY

The recruited researchers should be, at the time of selection, in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of their research careers (measured from the date when they obtained the degree which would formally entitle them to embark on a doctorate).
ESR should not already have a PhD and they should have the qualifications to embark on a PhD program.
At the time of selection by the host organization, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of their host organization for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to their recruitment. Short stays, such as holidays, are not taken into account.
ESR (regardless of their nationalities) must not have resided or carried out their main activities (work, studies, etc.) in the host country for more than 12 months in the last 3 years.
DURATION

The fellowship is awarded for a period 3 years.

The ESR will have a regular contract with the same rights and obligations as any other staff member of the host institution. Candidates should start within 3 months of the acceptance of the fellowship.

TRAINING AND BENEFITS

The Initial Training Network includes advanced scientific training, career development activities, workshops and other training initiatives for the initial research career of the involved ESRs. The ESRs will be committed to pursue the PhD degree during their work within the project, and they will have available all the doctorate program courses offered by the academic partners.

The training activities support the career development of new researchers by providing a variety of courses including project management, leadership skills, communications skills, grant writing, business development, intellectual property rights and others.

Marie Curie ITNs provide competitive financial support to the ESR including:

a competitive monthly living and mobility allowance,
a yearly travel allowance (i.e., a fixed amount of money based upon the direct distance between the location of origin of the researcher and the host institution),
a career exploratory allowance (i.e., a single payment for attending job interviews, additional courses, job fairs, etc.), and

Project description

We look for you who want to study for a PhD degree in the field of molecular medicine. The main project will be to investigate if measurements of protein activity status provide advantages for cancer diagnostics (leukemia and circulating tumour cells). Protein activity is determined as protein interactions and post-translational modifications, using flow cytometry and microscopy. The work will also consist of development of new methods in molecular biology. The methods that will be used are mainly variants of the proximity ligation assay (PLA). Purpose

The Riga Graduate School of Law announces Scholarships for an LL.M degree in Public International Law and Human Rights funded by the Open Society Institute (OSI). Eligible students currently are invited to apply for the Riga Graduate School of Law (RGSL) Public International Law and Human Rights Programme. The programme provides expertise in Public International Law and Human Rights and also offers courses in European Law. The programme is competitive and very prestigious. The Programme is based at the RGSL located in Riga, Latvia. It is available to individuals with bachelor’s or master’s degree in law or related fields (or will be awarded a degree prior to admission to the programme), obtained in at least four years long studies, if basic knowledge in law and corresponding work experience is acquired; second level professional higher education, professional bachelor’s or master’s degree in law or other related fields, if basic knowledge in law and corresponding work experience is acquired. Overview

Applicants for scholarship must fill out a current OSI SCHOLARSHIP ONLINE APPLICATION FORM.

The following documents should be attached to the application form:

[France] PhD Scholarship in Laser Optics

A PhD scholarship in Laser Optics has been announced for the academic year 2011. The PhD scholarship is in association with the Institute of Nuclear Sciences, France. The research area for this PhD scholarship is Optics - Laser optics - Applied optics / Engineering science, Metrology / Engineering science.

A shock loaded metal plate (tin, a few 10 GPa) is set in motion and may suffer damages on its back face, such as spalling or the ejection of a cloud of particles. This latter phenomenon depends on two main behaviours: microjetting (solid particles ejected from micro hollow charge consequence of the machining step), and the melting induced by the increasing temperature within the released matter.

The purpose of this thesis is to characterize the particles in this cloud in terms of mass surface density, in terms of speed laws (initial speed, braking, acceleration ....), diameters or even shapes.

We plan a theoretical approach based on hydrodynamic simulations, using ejection then interaction with ambient gas models but also on optical and photometric simulations for laser measurements. This approach will be supported by experimentations with high explosive, gun launcher or high power laser. Several types of diagnostics are available individually or simultaneously: mainly Photonic Doppler Velocimetry (PDV) which gives access to the speed laws versus time, but also light diffraction, X-ray radiography or Asay foil weighings.

Finally, particles can be caught during the experiment, for post-mortem analysis (micro-tomography).

The University of Edinburgh will offer 30 Master’s scholarships for postgraduate study in any subject offered by the University for the 2011-2012 academic session.

Ten scholarships will have a value of £5,000 each while a further twenty scholarships will have a value of £3,000 which will be tenable for one academic year.

Eligibility

The scholarships will be awarded to students who are nationals of countries outwith the EU who are accepted for admission on a full-time basis for a postgraduate Master’s programme of study at the University of Edinburgh.

Professor De Winter was always engaged with Technical Physics. Together with his wife, he was always interested in how ‘his’ students were doing. Professor De Winter died 7 October 2005. Mrs. De Winter is still very engaged with the University of Twente and expresses this by donating an annual €10.000 of which €7.500 is meant for awarding a scholarship.

Position

A research group focused on polymer-based nanocomposite research at The University of Western Ontario is looking for a postdoctoral fellow (PDF). The research group is interdisciplinary and consists of chemists, physicists and engineers from industry and academia. The research group is studying synthesis, functionalization, surface modification, characterization and testing of polymer nanocomposites. Much of the postdoctoral research will be carried out at Surface Science Western, a state-of-the-art surface analysis laboratory. The contract position is for one-year, with possible extensions and dependent on funding.

Qualifications

Candidates should have completed their Ph.D. in Polymer Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science or a related discipline with a strong background in polymer synthesis. Candidates with experience in polymer surface chemistry and surface characterization would be an asset. Strong communication skills, both written and spoken, are required to successfully work in this academic and industrial research team. Candidates are expected to work independently and be a productive member of the team. Hands on experience in materials process development is an asset.

Post-Doc, Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) : modeling the spread of vectors and vector-borne diseases (VBD) in a heterogeneous European landscape.

Description.
A two-years postdoctoral position is available in the Biological control and spatial ecology (LUBIES) lab, as part of the EDENext FP7-Health project “Biology and control of vector-borne infections in Europe”. EDENext aims to investigate the biological, ecological and epidemiological components of VBD introduction, emergence and spread, and to propose innovative tools for controlling them, building on the basis of acquired knowledge. The research activity is part of the modeling group that includes three other partners (University of Oxford, University of Louvain, Utrecht University) and coordinated by the Theoretical Epidemiology group (Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Utrecht University). The postdoctoral fellow will be responsible for developing, testing and validating models of vectors and VBD spread in a heterogeneous environment. More details on the project can be obtained upon demand. The postdoctoral associate will interact productively with EDENext collaborators, including those focusing on specific VBD systems. The postdoctoral associate will participate in lab meetings, interact productively with PhD and MSc students, and will be expected to present his/her research findings to international conferences and EDENext meetings and to publish findings in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Qualifications.
We are looking for an enthusiastic candidate holding a Ph.D. in quantitative ecology, population dynamics, mathematical modeling or biostatistics. The candidate should have demonstrated computational, communication and writing skills (English) and should be keen to work with experts from other disciplines. A good knowledge of R (spatial modeling functions and packages) and GIS software is an asset, but not essential. Candidates from the European Union are eligible for this position.

Employment.
ULB can offer you a temporary two-years full-time Post-doc appointment, with a gross salary approximately starting at 3,600 per month (salary scale 530 of Belgian Universities).

There are no teaching obligations. Preferred candidates will be widely recognized as leaders in their disciplines, with a strong record of peer-reviewed publication. Duties and Responsibilities:
Plasma polymer thin coatings deposited by means of an atmospheric CVD plasma process is an innovative way to protect polymers and in particular biopolymers, against damaging from the environment. Furthermore, such a process can be adapted to be implemented into industry and is considered as a 'green' process.

In this PhD program, the development of multilayer coatings for particular protective application will be carried out. The link between coatings structure and their protective properties will be particularly emphasized. The PhD program will involve two different areas namely coating processing and material characterizations. The new category of protective coatings will be produced by plasma polymerization. Thus, this study will give us a deeper knowledge for the growth of plasma polymer films and also, on plasma nanocomposite coatings.

The candidate should hold a Master degree in sciences, preferably in physics, chemistry, materials, surface sciences.
The candidate has to be motivated, structured and self-responsible in young and diversified research departments. This PhD program will be carried out in Luxembourg.

The Tumour Immunology laboratory conducts research on human immune response to herpes viruses with an aim to develop novel prophylactic and therapeutic strategies for the treatment of patients with herpes virus associated diseases.

We are seeking Postdoctoral Researchers and Research Assistants to join the Tumour Immunology Laboratory. These positions are funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council and Cancer Council Queensland and offer the opportunity to investigate human T cell responses against cytomegalovirus and Epstein-Barr virus in healthy virus carriers and patients with virus-associated malignancies. There are also opportunities to learn new skills in clinical translation and cell-based immunotherapy.

To be appointed as a postdoctoral researcher you must possess a PhD and for Research Assistants a recent university graduate qualification at the BSc or BSc (Hons) level in biology or in another related area is required. Background: Innate immune detections of and responsiveness to microbes is mediated by sets of receptors known as pattern recognition receptors (PRRs). PRRs are broadly categorized into three classes: Toll-like receptors (TLRs), NOD-like receptors (NLRs) and RIG-I-like receptors (RLRs). Activation of PRRs results in the production of a large set of proinflammatory cytokines and type I interferons (IFNs) which act concertedly to coordinate host defenses against foreign invasion. Although principally meant to protect the host, excessive or deregulated induction of such innate immune responses, can either lead to self injury (e.g during sepsis or autoimmune diseases). Therefore in orders to maintain an optimal balance between anti-microbial host defenses and guarding against causing self injury, PRR signaling pathways must be regulated tightly. We are interested in understanding the mechanisms that govern the regulation of PRRs signaling pathways and how the breakdown of such regulation may lead to inflammation or impair anti-microbial host defenses. Methods: These studies will involve using various in vivo mouse models of inflammation and infection as well in vitro studies using a variety of techniques including flow cytometry, microscopy, lentiviral transduction, mass spectrometry, standard cell culture, protein biochemistry, and cell/molecular biology techniques.

Location: Our new lab in Sweden belongs to the MIMS (The Laboratory for Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden (MIMS) within the Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine). MIMS constitutes the Swedish node within the Nordic partnership for Molecular Medicine that is formed together with the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and the Finland and Norway nodes. MIMS is established within the Umeå Centre for Microbial Research (UCMR) at Umeå University. The groups of the MIMS work in modern laboratories with well-equipped common facilities and platforms in a creative, inspiring and highly interactive environment.

Qualifications: We are looking for enthusiastic candidates who are interested in innate immunity and who have received or are about to receive a Ph.D preferably in immunology, microbiology, virology, cell/molecular biology. The position is available for the initial 2 years with a possibility of extension. Project: Estimation and prediction analysis of complex traits using genome-wide marker data

Description:
Advances in technology which allow typing of millions of DNA markers simultaneously have revolutionized gene mapping in human genetics, making it one of the most exciting and fast moving fields in science. Genetic studies such as these generate large volumes of data and require advanced statistical and computational methods to link disease and trait phenotypes from often thousands of individuals to the high density genetic data. We have pioneered the use of multi-marker statistical genetic methods in human genetics to elucidate the genetic architecture of complex traits and have developed a framework for predicting an individual’s risk to disease from genome-wide marker data. We have secured funding from for post-doctoral positions to enable us to build upon this foundation and develop and implement better methods to predict phenotypes from SNP data. This research could ultimately lead to diagnostic and prognostic genetic testing for complex genetic diseases. The successful applicants will be involved in the development and testing of methodologies for innovative whole-genome analyses of existing data, development and testing of new prediction methods, evolutionary modelling of the distribution of causal variants and new analyses of meta-analysis summary data.

The research will be directed by Dr. Naomi Wray and Professor Peter Visscher whose laboratories already contain 8 post-doctoral researchers. QIMR is one of the largest medical research institutes in the southern hemisphere, with programs in areas such as cellular and molecular sciences, epidemiology and population health, cancer biology, biotechnology, infectious diseases and vaccine development.

QIMR Research Officer (RO) $64,649-$69,397 depending on experiences. Appointment as Senior Research Officer (SRO) $73,049-$78,529 may be possible for applicants meeting the QIMR criteria for appointment at this level. These are full-time appointments for three years.

Duties
Work assignments mainly include own scientific work and supervision. The position may also include other assignments such as administrative service to the Department/Faculty/University and teaching of different student categories. The purpose of the position is to strengthen diabetes research within the GAME Unit. Securing external funding from national and international funding bodies, leading scientific publications in high-ranking peer-reviewed journals, and participation in education and research dissemination are key expectations of the successful applicant. Basis for assessment
Particular importance is given to scientific excellence in the subject field, which should adhere to and complement the existing research activities at LUDC. Scholarship Description:Candidates are expected to have their own, clearly defined academic profile. This means they should usually be working at least at the level of a Junior Professor or Junior Research Group Leader or Habilitand or be able to document independent research work over a number of years. The academic host must be an academic working abroad who has already been sponsored by the Humboldt Foundation. Candidates choose their own research projects and their host abroad and prepare their own research plan. The duration of the research fellowship (6-18 months) may be divided up into a maximum of three visits lasting a minimum of three months each. As a rule, no more than 36 months may elapse between the beginning of the first stay and the end of the last stay. Short-term visits for study and training purposes or for attending conferences are not eligible for sponsorship.
The Humboldt Foundation expects the host to contribute to financing the research fellowship. Over the duration of the fellowship, the host’s contribution should account for approximately a third of the total fellowship amount. However, host institutes in developing and threshold countries and in other selected countries (c.f. list of countries) are not required to make a financial contribution. If a host institute in another country experiences obvious difficulties in raising its contribution, the Humboldt Foundation may accommodate this particular case.

The CDC estimates that approximately 2 million people in the United States have epilepsy, and it is estimated that nearly 140,000 new cases will be diagnosed in the United States. The incidence is highest in individuals younger than age 2 and older than age 65, and higher among racial minorities than whites. Although epilepsy is a relatively common chronic condition, in the majority of cases, its cause remains a mystery. Epilepsy is usually controlled with medication; however, more than 30% of people with epilepsy do not have seizure control even with the best available therapies. From diagnosis to managing the physiologic and social effects of living with epilepsy, clinical research and supportive care are needed for patients and their families

The International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS) scheme is funded by the Commonwealth Government through the Department of Education, Employment & Workplace Relations (DEEWR). Its purpose is to attract high quality overseas postgraduate students to areas of research strength in higher education institutions to support Australia’s research effort. Approximately 15 scholarships may be available in 2012 for international students from any country undertaking postgraduate research in areas of University research strengths.
1.Course tuition fees for two years for a Masters degree by Research and three years for a Doctoral research degree (an extension is possible for doctoral programs only); and
2.Health insurance cover for students.
3.All successful IPRS applicants will also receive an Adelaide Scholarships International (ASI) place which provides an annual living allowance of approximately $22,860 (2011 value) for the normal duration of the program.

The Department of Geological Sciences (Stockholm University, Sweden) invites applications for the following PhD position in the Geochemistry. The position is fully funded through the Department.
Siderophore production and function in the geosphere: experimental studies and field measurements of mineral weathering and biomineralization.

Microorganisms are known to affect mineral weathering rates and the mobilization of essential and toxic metals in the environment. They can release strong organic complex chelators, so-called siderophores, which have a high affinity for metals. These low-molecular mass dissolved organic molecules are often specific for certain microorganisms or plants and allow them to gain a selective growth advantage in environments, where the availability of metal nutrients is limited. Siderophores can have a critical role in regulating biogeochemical cycles in terrestrial and marine systems, but the details of the molecular-scale processes and their effect on macroscale biogeochemical cycling are not well established. This study aims at understanding the relationships between siderophore production and function and their influence on biochemically induced weathering and biomineralisation of iron-bearing minerals like magnetite in terrestrial and marine environments. Field and experimental studies will be conducted to determine siderophore composition and concentration, and their relationship to microbial community composition and activity.

This is a fully funded four year PhD position under the joint supervision of Dr. Sara Holmström, Dr. Volker Brüchert, and Prof. Nils Holm. The successful applicant will study the interactions of microbes with the global earth with focus on the production and the role of biogenic siderophores in biogeochemical processes. Related activities include both laboratory and field work.

Denmark : PhD position in Quantum Sensing

Applications are invited for a three-year PhD scholarship within the field of quantum optics at the Department of Physics at the Technical University of Denmark. The project is a part of an international collaboration with the Max-Planck institute for the Science of light in Germany and Queensland University in Australia.

Spurred by the increasing demand on highly sensitive sensors in various sciences, optical systems that enable measurement precisions beyond what is possible with classical approaches by means of quantum technology are being intensely explored. Quantum sensing of various parameters beyond the standard classical limit have been achieved by a number of groups using quantum light, but all systems have been based on large bulk setups incompatible with real life applications. In this project we want to pursue a novel route to quantum sensing based on micro-cavities on a chip. The micro-cavities produce quantum light that can be used for the measurement of various quantities such as temperature, motion, position and rotation at sensitivities unreachable with conventional methods.

Qualifications:
master degree within optics/photonics, physics or engineering or a similar degree with an equivalent academic level.
background in quantum optics and micro-optics fabrication is an advantage.
good communication skills in English – written and spoken.
ability to work independently, and to be a part of a dynamical group.

in the framework of the large project “Biotechnology in Oil Recovery - BioRec”, supported by the Danish National Foundation for Advanced Technologies, Maersk Oil & Gas and DONG Energy.

Description of the project
A four-year BioRec project is focused around behavior and effects of microorganisms in reservoir engineering: Enhanced oil recovery (EOR), hydrate formation and inhibition, and bio-induced corrosion. The goal of the specific subproject is a highly focused investigation of the possible recovery mechanisms of Bio-EOR under conditions of the Danish North Sea reservoirs.

Application of the modern oil recovery methods never leads to complete recovery. Production of few ten percent is often considered to be a success. Can oil recovery be increased by the application of microorganisms and/or enzymes – protein catalysts from living systems? A positive answer would provide the opportunity to produce more oil in a relatively cheap and environmentally safe way.

The task of the PhD student
The tasks of the PhD students will be to carry out a series of laboratory experiments by displacement of oil by water containing bacteria and/or enzymes; and advanced mathematical modeling of the displacement processes under realistic reservoir conditions. Selection of the samples and bio-agents will be carried out in collaboration with industrial partners: Mærsk Oil & Gas, DONG Energy, Novozymes, and Danish Technological Institute.

The students are expected to exhibit creativity, openness to new challenges and interest to independent and nontrivial research.

The Knowledge Technology Research Group is looking to fill two fulltime PhD studentships funded by the DFG in the context of the International Research Training Group CINACS ( http://www.cinacs.org/ ) . This project offers a 3-year doctoral programme based at the University of Hamburg and at Tsinghua University, Beijing. The dissertation projects will be carried out at the University of Hamburg. A part of the studies (a few months) can be performed at Tsinghua University. The interdisciplinary programme provides exciting research opportunities in multisensory perception and cross-modal information processing.

Responsibilities:
The candidate is expected to conduct research in the area of Knowledge Technology and Neural Network Robotics. In these two projects we are particularly focused on working to-wards a) neural multimodal integration based on the superior colliculus and b) neural sound localisation for speech processing based on the inferior colliculus. We use an attractive humanoid robot scenario where humanoid robots interact with humans based on multimodal information. This includes the integration of an ambient environment with new cognitive humanoid robots.

Requirements:
Academic degree preferably in computer science or related qualifying the holder to carry out the above-mentioned responsibilities. In particular, an MSc or equivalent in computer science, artificial intelligence, robotics, engineering or equivalent is essential. Knowledge of artificial intelligence, neural networks or robotics and an interest to work in an interdisciplinary environment will be important. The post involves international travel. We are looking for excellent programming skills, e.g. in C++, C, Python, Java etc. We are also looking for very good communication skills and teamwork, including very good knowledge of English. Knowledge of German would be desirable.

The PhD stipend is for three years (2 plus 1) and fulltime.

Germany’s business school ESMT European School of Management and Technology has strengthened the emphasis placed on technology management and sustainable business in its MBA curriculum. Starting this year, students may choose a track focusing on one of these areas. Responsible leadership, a founding principle of ESMT, remains a central theme throughout the MBA curriculum. The practicalities of responsible leadership are introduced with a compulsory module dedicated to the concept and are intertwined throughout the program. This development reflects changes in the international business environment and has been welcomed by the 25 leading global companies, such as Allianz, Daimler, Deutsche Bank, and Siemens, who founded and work closely together with the business school in Germany.
The class of 28 men and 11 women, who represent 18 different nationalities, have started the one-year intensive international MBA in Berlin in January. They are on average 29 years old and have five years of work experience. Job Description
You prepare a Ph.D. thesis of the research project described below. You contribute to the research of the Department of Marketing and the Business Statistics Research Unit. You write scientific articles on the subject of your thesis. You have a limited number of teaching duties.
Project Description
Advertisers face the decision how much to spend on advertising and how to allocate these resources across media types in order to achieve the best results. The project investigates the impact of advertising investments, media mix allocation and advertising share of voice on short-term advertising and brand effects, on consumer activation (gathering extra information, visiting websites and generating word-of-mouth), and on their impact on long-term brand effects. The studies are based on a large, detailed and growing database made available for academic research by a large commercial broadcaster. This database combines data on real-life advertisements: measures of ad recall, recognition and attribution, short-term and long-term brand effects (brand attitude and brand equity) and customer activation measures, and data on advertising spending in all mass media for large samples of consumers over a long period of time and for a great variety of brands, product categories and advertising campaigns. The analysis of this data requires state-of-the-art statistical models due to the presence of categorical outcomes and the resulting need for non-linear statistical models, the multi-level nature of the data and the usefulness of mixture-amount models as a novel technique to assess optimal media mixes for different levels of advertising investments.
Profile and requirements
You have a Masters degree or equivalent in (business) economics, commercial engineering, econometrics or applied statistics. Your research and teaching skills are compatible with the policies of the University of Antwerp. You can provide evidence of an excellent academic record. You can express yourself well in written and spoken English. You share our enthusiasm for scientific research.
Our offer
We offer a full-time position, under the conditions of the Dehousse grants, as a doctoral fellow for two years, with the possibility of renewal for a further two-year period after positive evaluation. The expected date of appointment is September 1st, 2011. Students in the final year of their degree course are allowed to apply.
